MEMBERS of the White Hills Bowls Club are excited for the future, with refurbished toilet and kitchen bringing the facilities up to date.<\/p>\n
The work was enabled by a $3000 grant from the City of Greater Bendigo, and president Allan Charlton said the next step is to hire a paid head coach.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe may be one of the few clubs in Bendigo that don\u2019t have a coach,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThree of our members are coach-accredited, but we\u2019re looking for someone with a bit more experience that can oversee the coaching of our over 100 members of all different abilities.\u201d<\/p>\n
WHBC competes in five Saturday and three mid-week pennant divisions, winning four premierships over the last two seasons.<\/p>\n
Mr Charlton said the addition of a coach is crucial to the continuing development of members so they can compete at higher levels.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf a club has a coach, newer members who really want to improve their bowls would then come to play and get that tuition to get their bowls started,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The upgraded facilities come as a boost to the social side of the bowls club, particularly its Tuesday night club competition, Wednesday afternoon casual competition and Friday night happy hour with drinks, darts and indoor carpet bowls.<\/p>\n
Mr Charlton said WHBC has a focus on hosting corporate barefoot bowls events, as well as attracting new people to the sport.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re trying to involve the community as much as we can as well as our members just for people to come and have a look,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf we can provide a better environment when they come here, hopefully they\u2019ll stay and want to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n
