BENDIGO Community Health Service is re-opening its soup kitchen, following a two-year closure.<\/p>\n
Operated out of its Fork in the Road community hub, the health service has not been running the free meals program due to the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n
BCHS CEO Gerard Jos\u00e9 said he expects demand will be a little higher this year.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know the cost of living is putting many people and families under significant financial pressure, and often that means making difficult decisions about where to spend their money each week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is one way our community can work together to ensure people have access to nutritious food.\u201d<\/p>\n
The weekly kitchen operates in partnership with the Department of Justice and Community Safety, with clients supported to improve their cooking and customer service skills.<\/p>\n
Mr Jos\u00e9 says the program provides more than just a free meal; it brings people together.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt a time when we know many have experienced further isolation and loneliness as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the cafe style soup kitchen allows people to interact in person and remain connected,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is one of the greatest strengths of the program.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Fork in the Road space, located at 165-171 Hargreaves Street, is provided free of charge by the Andrews Foundation.<\/p>\n
BCHS is calling for donations of non-perishable items for its community pantry which is also available for those in need.<\/p>\n
The soup kitchen will operate each Thursday starting 7 July from 4pm to 5.30pm.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
