{"id":83862,"date":"2022-07-07T04:59:07","date_gmt":"2022-07-06T17:59:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=83862"},"modified":"2022-07-07T11:06:00","modified_gmt":"2022-07-07T00:06:00","slug":"naidoc-week-about-culture-and-country","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/naidoc-week-about-culture-and-country\/","title":{"rendered":"NAIDOC Week about culture and country"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THIS week, Bendigo First Nations people have been celebrating NAIDOC Week, recognising and showcasing their history, culture and achievements.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dja Dja Wurrung man Trent Nelson said the ceremonies and events that have taken place are for the wider community, including the non-Aboriginal community.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAll these different events, films, talks happening are about connecting and talking about those things on a culturally safe space,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s also a safe space for non-Aboriginal people to talk, ask questions, bring their kids along.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the City of Greater Bendigo\u2019s flag raising ceremony on Monday, Mr Nelson said the turnout was the strongest it\u2019s been.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEach year it\u2019s getting bigger and bigger,\u201d he said. \u201cMy first one I did 10 years ago there was probably a handful of people and some walking past thinking \u2018what\u2019s going on?\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s getting to a point where every time we do something there\u2019s big crowds. Stand Up! Show Up! and is aimed at encouraging First Nations people to take pride in their culture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a really important theme around leadership,\u201d Mr Nelson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of our people still struggle with being front and centre in the limelight and talking about their feelings as an Aboriginal person or the struggles they go through.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of our people are really shy to stand up and do that. This week is about being proud of who you are.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt also goes to the point of people who are of the Stolen Generation as well who might not know who they connect to, it gives them a platform to be a part of it and own a bit of that culture for themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NAIDOC Week officially wraps up on Sunday but before then St John of God will launch its Aboriginal art exhibition on Friday and the Bendigo Amateur Soccer League match between FC Eaglehawk and Strathdale will be First Nations themed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THIS week, Bendigo First Nations people have been celebrating NAIDOC Week, recognising and showcasing their history, culture and achievements.
