{"id":84343,"date":"2022-07-28T04:34:33","date_gmt":"2022-07-27T18:34:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=84343"},"modified":"2022-07-27T18:20:48","modified_gmt":"2022-07-27T08:20:48","slug":"praise-for-emerging-bomber","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/sport\/praise-for-emerging-bomber\/","title":{"rendered":"Praise for emerging Bomber"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">VFL\/AFL legend Leigh Matthews has said Essendon have got a \u201cbeauty\u201d in emerging ruckman Sam Draper.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Draper\u2019s raw talent was on display in the Bombers\u2019 48-point win over Gold Coast, kicking one of the goals of the season after a wonderful solo run and finish.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 23-year-old\u2019s agility at ground level reminds Matthews of one of his former legendary Hawthorn teammates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI love ruckmen who do more than hit-outs,\u201d Matthews told <em>Sportsday<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI mentioned the fact that Don Scott, who was the ruckman when I played at Hawthorn for most of the time I played, he was inducted as a Legend into the Hall of Fame for Hawthorn on Friday night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI love ruckmen who are big, powerful, aggressive and if they\u2019ve got a bit of agility at ground level, gee, they\u2019re valuable.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cDon Scott had that and certainly Sam Draper has.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cYou\u2019ve just got to remind yourself he\u2019s 23 and played 30-odd games. He\u2019s a beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Essendon coach Ben Rutten sees Draper shouldering a larger portion of the ruck duties in the coming years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Bombers cult figure has played 38 games since making his AFL debut in 2020.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe\u2019s such an energic, spiritual kind of guy for our group. He really does generate some momentum for us,\u201d Rutten said on <em>Sportsday<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe\u2019s in his third season, he\u2019s just ticked over 35 games, so it\u2019s a really big ask to ask a young ruckman to be able to shoulder the ruck load on their own.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThat\u2019s been a fair bit of the decision making that we\u2019ve had around playing Andrew Phillips, he\u2019s a 30-year-old ruckman for us, a pretty seasoned competitor, and Nick Bryan has also got some game time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019re certainly finding that Sammy Draper\u2019s presence and his energy around the ball is certainly more beneficial and playing about 60 to 65 per cent ruck time seems to be a nice little sweet spot for him at the moment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe think as the years go on, he\u2019ll be able to build that resilience into his body and be able to play more ruck and more game time himself.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBut I think that\u2019s about right for him at the moment and we\u2019re seeing some reward with his performance as a result.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8211;\u00a0BY ALEX ZAIA\/ SEN<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>VFL\/AFL legend Leigh Matthews has said Essendon have got a \u201cbeauty\u201d in emerging ruckman Sam Draper.
