{"id":85265,"date":"2022-09-15T04:56:08","date_gmt":"2022-09-14T18:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=85265"},"modified":"2022-09-13T12:29:54","modified_gmt":"2022-09-13T02:29:54","slug":"local-publisher-on-national-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/local-publisher-on-national-stage\/","title":{"rendered":"Local publisher on national stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">BENDIGO-based founder and editor of <em>OAK Magazine<\/em>, Kimberley Furness, was announced as the runner up of the national 2022 AgriFutures Rural Women Award last week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Furness founded <em>OAK<\/em> in 2017 to showcase stories of regional and rural women and won the statewide award in March this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">She said it was amazing to accept the award and she \u201cdidn\u2019t think this year could get any better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAgriFutures provides such a wonderful platform to celebrate and inspire the next generation of female changemakers in Australia,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTo be one of those is still a pinch-me moment, but it\u2019s such an honour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The national award was won by Tasmanian motherhood advocate and founder of <em>Motherland Australia<\/em>, Stephanie Trethewey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Furness said she has interviewed past finalists and winners for her magazine and knows how well connected AgriFutures alumni are.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThey\u2019re an incredible group of women who are willing to connect you, open a door and help you along the journey,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s so important, so we can hear more women\u2019s voices in the important areas of life where the big decisions are made. There are definitely more connections to come, and I have this incredible network now to lean on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Following her state win, Furness launched a new podcast called <em>Take Me Somewhere<\/em>, recorded in a converted van.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAudio podcasting has been an incredible experience,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel it\u2019s one of the most powerful forms of storytelling. It allows us to share more regional and rural voices and get our stories out there even further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">As runner-up, Furness received $15,000 which she said she will use to expand her editorial capacity and travel to Western Australia and the Northern Territory to record more episodes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI can now travel around to vibrant regional cities and rural events and interview everyone,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201c[I can] be their person-to-person contact, create a bond with someone, help reduce that feeling of isolation and while doing that also share their story.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BENDIGO-based founder and editor of OAK Magazine, Kimberley Furness, was announced as the runner up of the national 2022 AgriFutures Rural Women Award last week.
