MEMBERS of the croquet section of the Golden Square Bowling and Croquet Club are opening up the greens for come and try days this October and November.<\/p>\n
The sport has changed a lot since it was played with flamingos and hedgehogs in Lewis Carrol\u2019s Alice in Wonderland.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s a game that can be played by people of all ages and men and women compete on equal terms.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s a lot more than just a game of hitting a ball through a hoop, and a lot of strategy is involved as players try to get in the best position to go through a hoop or hit their opponents ball away to stop them gaining an advantage.<\/p>\n
Croquet is especially good for people looking to get back into sport after a period of inactivity as it involves gentle exercise, mental stimulation and social interaction.<\/p>\n
While most players are content to play social games, there\u2019s the opportunity for local, national and even international competition for those who want to try and go that far.<\/p>\n
\u201cCroquet is heaps of fun, very social and a tactical and absorbing game\u201d said croquet section convenor Kerin Penfold. \u201cEveryone will be made most welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n
With a view to increasing the club membership come and try sessions will be held on Fridays for six weeks starting 14 October.<\/p>\n
Everyone is welcome to come and have a go between 9.30am and noon. All equipment is provided, and flat-soled footwear is a must.<\/p>\n
