The Rotary Bendigo Easter Art Show has been running for more than half-a-century and for every one of those fifty-plus years the name Geoff Paynter has been associated in some way.<\/p>\n
From Queen Elizabeth Gardens, to the YMCA, to Bendigo Senior Secondary College, and now at its current home at Town Hall, Paynter\u2019s works have been hanging from the display walls.<\/p>\n
But in the last few years he\u2019s also taken on an extra duty and joined the curating team where he\u2019s charged with hanging all the artworks, which is a pretty daunting exercise he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are hit with 900 pictures in two days,\u201d he said. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what size, colour or shape they are going to be, and you have got to hang and present them.<\/p>\n
\u201cHopefully you have a good crew because if you don\u2019t have the other eight, nine or 10 people who are helping, you have Buckley\u2019s of hanging all the pictures.\u201d<\/p>\n
Paynter said getting all the works up on the wall may sound simple, but there is more to it than meets the eye.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou start with a blank wall or panel, and you take one big image, then some medium and small and it\u2019s pretty logical in that regard.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut you\u2019ve got to fit the space, make it look comfortable and not too crowded.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe principle of it is, you don\u2019t hang two large pictures together, you don\u2019t hang two that are similar together, so you don\u2019t put two abstracts or realistic pictures together.\u201d<\/p>\n
Among the art pieces Paynter will be hanging are some of his own and it won\u2019t be his first time in the show, nor will it be his last he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf this is their 54th show this is my 54th time entering,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will do it till I drop, I won\u2019t be stopping. I\u2019m not a bowler and I no longer play golf, so this is what I do, just as I have always done.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
