A CEREMONIAL sitting was held at the new Bendigo Law Courts last week to mark the Supreme Court\u2019s first hearing at the new facility.<\/p>\n
The sitting took place on Wednesday morning before the court announced a ruling on an appeal case.<\/p>\n
Chief Justice Anne Ferguson presided over the ceremony and said the new law courts were something to be admired, and it was important to continue to improve and adapt as times change.<\/p>\n
\u201cCongratulations goes to everyone involved in the court\u2019s development,\u201d she said. \u201cThe entire community can be immensely proud of this new regional landmark.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must continue to ask ourselves how we can improve and what we can do better; differently. The courts are no exception.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey must respond to the changing needs and expectations of users and people in the community. The Bendigo Law Courts, its new building and operations reflect this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Victorian Bar Association president Sam Hay said the development of the new court precinct was a boon for the local justice system and community.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis innovative court is the first in Victoria to feature a full suite of specialist courts in one location,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a result, residents of Bendigo and its surrounding regional areas now have ready access to the best possible courts services.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo longer will residents need to travel to Melbourne to access justice. Apart from reducing travel times, this building will minimise delays in finalising court matters through its enhanced facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Law Institute of Victoria board director Juliana Smith was also on hand at the ceremonial sitting and said as a local practitioner she was appreciative of the new building.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have worked in Bendigo since 2007 and on many occasions appeared at law courts here,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am one of many who are experiencing a deep sense of gratitude walking into this new building. To the many people from all walks of life who made this project happen, we say thank you.<\/p>\n
