{"id":90349,"date":"2023-06-25T04:56:02","date_gmt":"2023-06-24T18:56:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=90349"},"modified":"2023-06-22T10:49:22","modified_gmt":"2023-06-22T00:49:22","slug":"simple-card-game-goes-big","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/simple-card-game-goes-big\/","title":{"rendered":"Simple card game goes big"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IN bookstores and games shops across the world you may have seen boxes of cards with <em>The Art of Conversation<\/em> on the cover.<\/p>\n<p>The series of cards are award-winning discussion starters developed in Bendigo by Louise Howland and Keith Lamb.<\/p>\n<p>It was a long time ago before the internet existed when the duo came up with the idea Ms Howland said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt first, we thought it was a good book idea so we sent it off to Harper Collins,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was before the internet, and it was before mainstream publishing in China, so Keith and I messed around with both book and card type formats and Harper Collins really liked the card format.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the deal fell over at the last hurdle when Harper Collins decided the cost of producing the cards was too high.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Howland said the pair kept pushing forward, publishing the cards themselves before sourcing local and overseas distribution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe found a great games distributor in Australia,\u201d she said. \u201cThen I went over to book fairs in both the UK and the US and attempted to find distribution for it, which I did and it just developed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut then because it was selling well in the US, they came back and said, \u2018When\u2019s the next one coming out?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This has led to several new releases over the years including <em>The Art of Travel Conversation<\/em> as well as food, couples, and rock\u2018n\u2019roll titles.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Art of Children\u2019s Conversation<\/em> is one title Ms Howland remembers fondly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m a psych nurse,\u201d she said. \u201cI&#8217;m an English teacher and I did a Masters in Life Writing, Image, Sound and Text so this was my background, and I was interested in the conversations we had with our children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat sit-down dinner where you talk and where you&#8217;re listening is perhaps something that doesn&#8217;t happen as much as it used to. So, in a sense, <em>The Art of Children&#8217;s Conversation<\/em> is to give people a way to recreate that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Art of Conversation<\/em> and its varying versions have gone on to be sold across the world and used in ways the creators are proud of Ms Howland said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really are thrilled,\u2019 she said. \u201cIt&#8217;s gone all sorts of places. They\u2019re used in teaching and in mentoring programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are also used for improving children\u2019s communication skills as well as in anti-bullying programs at schools.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IN bookstores and games shops across the world you may have seen boxes of cards with The Art of Conversation on the cover.
