JUNIOR students from Girton Grammar shaved their heads last Friday to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.<\/p>\n
Their classmates watched on as 11 students from Girton’s junior school had their heads shaved by stylists from Stephen Mow Hair Studio.<\/p>\n
Mrs Viv Bath, deputy head of Girton’s junior school, is a strong advocate for the yearly event and said the students were proud of their contribution.<\/p>\n
“While the shave is certainly a fun and exciting spectacle, it is also very moving to see such young students making a sacrifice of this magnitude,” Mrs Bath said.<\/p>\n
“It shows their courage, as well as their commitment to a cause that affects so many Australians.”<\/p>\n
Leukaemia is the name given to a group of cancers that develop in blood cells and kills up to 16 Australians every day.<\/p>\n
Girton students have supported the fundraiser to support blood cancer research and awareness for the past 17 years and last year the school received more than $16,500 in donations.<\/p>\n
This year the students set their sights on raising $20,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation and have so far raised a total of $24,000.<\/p>\n
Campus wide, the students celebrated the courage of their classmates by sporting crazy and colourful hairstyles.<\/p>\n
The Junior School Student Representative Council sponsored the students to shave their heads and also sold icy poles to boost fundraising efforts.<\/p>\n
“The students are very proud to continue Girton’s long legacy of raising funds and awareness through the World’s Greatest Shave,” Mrs Bath said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
