THE City of Greater Bendigo is seeking comment on the proposed name for a new community hub in Marong.<\/p>\n

It wants to call the development, at 36 Torrens Street, Marrungi Wayaparra Community Hub Marong.<\/p>\n

Marrungi Wayaparra means meeting in Marong in the Dja Dja Wurrung language.<\/p>\n

The city recently secured $5.5 million in state government funding to deliver the first stage of a new kindergarten and community hub for the town.<\/p>\n

The hub site presently hosts the Marong Community Hall, Marong Neighbourhood House and Community Garden, an old fire shed and a new kindergarten.<\/p>\n

The city’s community partnerships manager, Andie West, said the municipality was a naming authority for places it owns and manages.<\/p>\n

“The naming of existing and new city-owned facilities in traditional owner language is in line with the city’s reconciliation plan Barpangu 2021-2025 and our strong commitment to supporting Aboriginal place naming and the use of traditional owner language in public spaces across the municipality.”<\/p>\n

Ms West said naming of all roads, features and localities in Victoria needed to follow the statutory requirements of the Naming Rules for Places in Victoria policy.<\/p>\n

“Following consultation with Djaara and Geographic Names Victoria, the city is now undertaking a naming process for the site,” she said.<\/p>\n

“Registering place names with Geographic Names Victoria is essential to identify locations for managing emergencies and delivering goods and services.”<\/p>\n

Feedback on the proposal can be submitted through the city’s Let’s Talk platform at letstalkgreaterbendigo.com.au up until June 14.<\/p>\n
