Photo: PETER WEAVING<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The goal of this initiative is to address the alarming issue of raised blood pressure, which remains the leading cause of preventable death worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By offering accessible blood pressure screenings, we hope to raise awareness and encourage proactive health management within our community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>May Measure Month is a global screening campaign initiated by the International Society of Hypertension.<\/p>\n<p>Under the guidance of Dr Melissa Deacon-Crouch, the university&#8217;s associate professor of rural nursing, students involved in the local initiative received training on taking blood pressure in preparation for the sessions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2024\/05\/PDW_7186_68845.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy health: Ross and Bikki Henderson have their readings taken by paramedic student Joseph McMahon and pharmacy student Wayneq Truong. Photo: PETER WEAVING<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The sessions have also provided students with the chance to enhance their interviewing, assessment, gaining informed consent practice, and patient education skills,&#8221; the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Each student has received a certificate for their participation.<\/p>\n<p>A similar session was held in Mildura last week, with another planned for Thursday, 6 June in Shepparton.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2017, volunteers in more than 100 countries have screened people for blood pressure issues under the May Measure Month program.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone who registers as hypertensive is given advice about what they need to do next.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>KEEPING tabs on blood pressure isn&#8217;t something at the forefront of most people&#8217;s minds, until it has to be.
