CHESS fever is set to hit Hargreaves Mall during the approaching school holidays when two Chess in the Mall days take place.<\/p>\n

A joint initiative of the Bendigo Chess Club and Chess on the Hill, the event will be held on Saturday 29 June and Saturday 6 July from 10.30am to 2.30pm at the Williamson Street end of the mall, near the bakery.<\/p>\n

The events are open to all ages and skill levels, and will be free of charge with no bookings required.<\/p>\n

Everyone is welcome to have a game with, or learn from, some of Bendigo’s finest players using giant chess boards, boards for social games and a simultaneous display.<\/p>\n

From sharpening cognitive skills to fostering social connections, the benefits of playing chess are considered to be as diverse as the game itself.<\/p>\n

Chess in the Mall coordinator and Chess on the Hill founder Andre Sardone said that, at its core, chess was a mental workout that challenged players to think critically, plan ahead and adapt to changing circumstances.<\/p>\n

“In essence, chess is more than just a game, it’s a timeless pursuit that challenges the mind and brings people together in a shared quest for fun, companionship, intellectual growth and mastery,” Mr Sardone said.<\/p>\n

“It’s a great activity for all ages and backgrounds so we’d love everyone to come along \u2013 young and old \u2013 to enjoy a game or two and learn more about playing chess in Bendigo.”<\/p>\n

Mr Sardone said research had shown that regular chess play can enhance cognitive abilities such as memory, problem-solving and decision-making.<\/p>\n

But it was also a social game fostering connections and camaraderie among players, he said.<\/p>\n

“Whether played for pleasure, competition or self-improvement, chess can offer a wealth of benefits that endure long after the final checkmate.”<\/p>\n

The Bendigo Chess Club meets at 7pm each Wednesday in Bendigo, and Chess on the Hill from 10am Saturdays at the Old Church on the Hill, Quarry Hill.<\/p>\n
