{"id":97408,"date":"2024-07-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-09T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=97408"},"modified":"2024-07-03T22:07:06","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T12:07:06","slug":"sheep-on-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/sheep-on-show\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheep on show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THOUSANDS of sheep will take centre stage when the annual Australian Sheep and Wool Show is held at the Bendigo Showgrounds from July 19 to 21.<\/p>\n<p>Billed as the largest of its type in the world, this year&#8217;s show will be the 145th instalment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Early sheep entries are looking wonderful, our trade sites sold out in mid-May, everyone is feeling great about the show and wants to be involved,&#8221; said Australian Sheep Breeders&#8217; Association CEO Margot Falconer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our event celebrates the very best in sheep genetics, the most up-to-date farming practices and the technologies that will take us onwards and upwards into the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Everything from Australia&#8217;s most prized rams and fleeces, to lamb meals and woollen goods are to be highlighted, as are educational and career pathways.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2024\/07\/02_96785.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"865\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The latest wool fashions will be presented in twice-daily parades.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all about the opportunities that will help us meet the challenges ahead,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, the show will include the rare Valais Blacknose sheep, a breed that originated in Switzerland and is distinct for its long, coarse, white wool, black face and ears, black markings on the knees, hocks and ankles, and spiral horns.<\/p>\n<p>The feature breed will be the Dohne Merino, bred in South Africa from 1938 and brought to Australia in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>They will be among up to 3000 sheep from five states in the livestock sheds, with judging to determine Australia&#8217;s top wool and prime lamb bloodlines.<\/p>\n<p>Merino ram and Supreme Dorper sales will be held on the Sunday.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2024\/07\/03_01733.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"415\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the spotlight: More than 3000 sheep will be on display during the Australian Sheep and Wool Show. Photos: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Australian Fleece Competition attracts more than 400 entries in classes involving Merinos, Dohnes, Polwarths, Corriedales and other breeds.<\/p>\n<p>Many fleeces are auctioned for charity, with bone marrow organisation Strength to Give chosen as a beneficiary.<\/p>\n<p>Other activities include shearing competitions, the Central Victorian Yard Dog Championships, the Bendigo Festival of Lamb, a careers and technology hub, a fibre market with more-than 300 retail sites, an arts and craft pavilion, twice-daily wool fashion parades, and networking opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are available at sheepshow.com, starting at $25 for adults and $17 for students and concessions, with discounts for three-day passes.
