{"id":97470,"date":"2024-07-12T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-11T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=97470"},"modified":"2024-07-10T15:53:25","modified_gmt":"2024-07-10T05:53:25","slug":"social-bbq-to-get-men-chatting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/social-bbq-to-get-men-chatting\/","title":{"rendered":"Social BBQ to get men chatting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE next monthly Mr Perfect social barbecue will take place at Lake Weeroona this Sunday 14 July.<\/p>\n<p>The barbies are held regularly across Australia, designed to provide men with an informal place to have a chat about life and foster new connections.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Perfect is not a crisis service, but rather a social support organisation also offering information and resources around mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Bendigo host Luke Baker said the local barbecues started in December 2022 and response had been good, with between 15 and 20 people attending each month.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a good mix of returning attendees and new attendees,&#8221; Mr Baker said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the purpose of the barbecues was to create a place where people could go and enjoy the company of others.<\/p>\n<p>And while men&#8217;s mental health is a focus, the barbecues are not exclusive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t turn anyone away,&#8221; Mr Baker said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a chance to build up people&#8217;s social interactions and conversation skills.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2024\/07\/MrPerfectBendigoBBQF_40327.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"451\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Bendigo events regularly attract as many as 20 people.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Baker said participants could talk to others about issues affecting their lives if they desired, but it was not a requirement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just turn up, have a free snag, a free soft drink and a bit of a chat,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Perfect was founded in 2016 by Sydney man Terry Cornick to help other men with their mental health.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Baker said the need to provide support for people with mental health issues has always been there.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we&#8217;re getting better at understanding the stigma attached to mental health,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we&#8217;re getting better as a society at asking for help or reaching out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Registrations for the 14 July event, at the barbecue shelter closest to the train line, are not required.
