{"id":98640,"date":"2024-08-30T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-29T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/?p=98640"},"modified":"2024-08-29T14:24:03","modified_gmt":"2024-08-29T04:24:03","slug":"family-link-in-new-hotel-ownership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/bendigotimes\/news\/family-link-in-new-hotel-ownership\/","title":{"rendered":"Family link in new hotel ownership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHEN the Gold Mines Hotel in Golden Square came up for sale, an historic family connection made the decision to buy it a simple one for couple Andy and Amy Carlile.<\/p>\n<p>And it was only a matter of days between Mrs Carlile spotting the opportunity and paperwork being prepared.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was very much a moment of fate, it was absolutely meant to be,&#8221; Mrs Carlile said.<\/p>\n<p>The Carliles, both born and bred in Bendigo, moved to the Mornington Peninsula 17 years ago and set up the successful Adventure Plus Outdoor Education business.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2024\/08\/GoldminesHotel-9_96487.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andy and Amy Carlile toast taking over ownership of the Gold Mines Hotel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But during the COVID-19 pandemic, they moved back to Bendigo to be closer to their families and started looking for a business to get into.<\/p>\n<p>The Gold Mines Hotel was perfect, particularly considering that Mrs Carlile&#8217;s great-grandmother Mary Jane Russell was the only person outside the Sterry family to ever hold the licence, running the venue from 1910 to 1918.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;d been searching for something that was &#8216;us&#8217;, and this was perfect; perfect timing, perfect everything,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When it popped up and I saw it, I sent the agent an email that evening and we came in the next day. The day after we were getting paperwork together.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We knew we wanted it, and as soon as we walked in we felt at home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Gold Mines Hotel re-opened for business early in July.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/24\/2024\/08\/GoldminesHotel-10_00559.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Buying the hotel was meant to be for Amy and Andy Carlile.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Carlile said most existing staff had stayed on, several new employees had joined the team, and early customer response had been positive.<\/p>\n<p>Their aim has been to preserve the 1872 hotel&#8217;s history, and add a range of relevant touches including Chippendale Chesterfield lounges and old photographs.<\/p>\n<p>They have rejuvenated a small front drinks room and are also giving the property&#8217;s large back garden and lake \u2013 a popular wedding location \u2013 makeovers. An undercover dancefloor is also on the agenda.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to pay homage to the Gold Mines Hotel; she&#8217;s an historical part of Bendigo,&#8221; Mrs Carlile said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;She&#8217;s a beautiful building.
