THE multimillion-dollar Bendigo Special Developmental School upgrade has officially begun, with a ceremonial sod-turning taking place last week.<\/p>\n
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards joined school council president Leah Thomas and students at the Kangaroo Flat campus for the event, saying the project would provide more opportunities for students.<\/p>\n
The $8.9 million capital works program was funded in the State Government’s 2022\u20132023 budget and will result in new classrooms and learning facilities for about 150 students.<\/p>\n
“This upgrade will deliver modern, purpose-built classrooms and learning spaces so students at Bendigo Special Developmental School can achieve their full potential and teachers can help them thrive,” Ms Edwards said.<\/p>\n
“I’ve been proud to work with staff, school council members and students to secure the funding for this project, and I can’t wait to see the benefits this will bring for the whole school community.”<\/p>\n
The school opened in 2007 on the site of the old Kangaroo Flat Primary School.<\/p>\n
The new classrooms are expected to open in term one, 2026. A new physical education hub, for which the government provided $300,000 in 2020, is scheduled to open early next year.<\/p>\n
The school offers education for students aged five to 18 with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities.<\/p>\n
Ms Edwards said the projects are part of a broader initiative by the government to upgrade 36 specialist schools across Victoria over four years.<\/p>\n
Principal Kirshy McAinch said the upgrade will be a significant improvement on the existing facilities, where activities had to take place in specific areas because some spaces are limited in their function.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe goal is to create universal classrooms that can support a range of activities and needs within a cohesive environment,\u201d Ms McAinch said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe school community has worked tirelessly to advocate for these improvements, and the overwhelming sense of anticipation is palpable.<\/p>\n
