Peter Doherty

Current occupation and background:

I work in aged care and have worked as a union organiser for many years and truly understand what it is like for local working class people living pay cheque to pay cheque.

How long in the Byron community?

I’m a long time Bangalow local and have raised our kids here.

Community involvement?

I co-founded Bangalow Koalas, initially helping pull our neighbours together to replant a Koala corridor at the back of our house. We need to do more to protect our local Koalas, supporting organisations like Bangalow Koalas, but also completing a Koala Plan of Management for the hinterland.

Top three issues facing your area?

I want to keep what is special about our region. I will work to deliver new housing to combat the housing crisis, but am cautious about big, developer-led projects that could ruin our community and environmental amenity. We need to ensure that it is our community that decides what the future of our towns are, not developers.
