Blair Witch 25th anniversary Halloween event
WHEN The Blair Witch Project hit movie screens in 1999, millions of viewers thought they were watching the real thing.
Before the ‘going viral’ era, the film’s camcorder-led story about a group of teenage students lost in the woods had an unprecedented impact on the horror genre and terrified millions.
The modest $35,000 film grossed nearly $250 million and became a pop culture behemoth.
Lauded as one of the scariest movies of all time, the premise of three intrepid young filmmakers on a two-day hike never to return was frightening enough. For their footage to be ostensibly ‘discovered’ a year later and turned into the final film added an unforgettable layer of spine-tingling terror.
The Washington Post called it ‘not the goriest, the grossest, the weirdest, the eeriest, the sickest, the creepiest or the slimiest… just flat out the scariest’, and RottenTomatoes said it proved that ‘imagination can be as scary as anything onscreen’.
For those horror-inclined, Byron Theatre is offering a Halloween night of thrills and chills in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the iconic film.
A spooky theatre skit by talented local artists will precede the main feature, and audiences can relive the classic horror flick in a unique atmosphere. Prizes are on offer for the best Halloween attire, including a Best Dressed and a Worst Dressed lucky door prize.
