Indie folk pop stars Frente! are back on the circuit and hitting the Brunswick Picture House on October 19.

Forming in 1989, during a time when pop was dominated by grunge, the duo’s quirky guitar and a vocal blend of alternative and folk-pop was a fresh voice on the radio waves and the charts.

Beginning with a distribution deal with MDS (Mushroom Distribution Service), the band quickly became part of the Mushroom fold.

Their 1992 single ‘Accidentally Kelly Street’ shot the bright, sweet sound to the charts, along with ‘Ordinary Angels’, ‘Labour of Love’ and an acoustic take on New Order’s ‘Bizarre Love Triangle’.

Listeners embraced Angie Hart’s vocals, given the distinctive Australian accent was unusual at a time when many hits favoured the popular US sound. Simon Austin’s guitar was likened to the work of The Smiths’ Johnny Marr and The Sundays’ Dave Gavurin.

While some tracks were reviewed as too ‘sweet’ at the time, the band’s reception internationally was very different. Following the well-travelled road to the US, Frente! toured extensively with some of the biggest artists of the day including Everything But The Girl, The Beautiful South, Crowded House and Alanis Morissette.

Frente! joined the Mushroom 50 Live anniversary celebration of the iconic label, which featured Australia’s most beloved artists in a 50-song extravaganza in November 2023.

A new generation has since discovered the quirky, uplifting melodies. Old fans have welcomed the artists with open arms in their latest incarnation.
