Hussy Hicks ready to create more magical musical memories
AS A teenager growing up in Lennox Head, Leesa Gentz has fond memories of attending Bluesfest with her family and friends – not realising that one day she would be up there on stage herself.
“My parents were big music lovers, so they were encouraging of all kinds of live music events,” the Hussy Hicks singer said.
“It was a big eye opener and a massive inspiration from a very young age.
“I remember in the early days having lots of friends playing there. I wasn’t allowed backstage in those days, but we’d catch up when they came out and hang out.
“I can’t count the number of times I’ve been and the magical musical moments I’ve had there.”
This weekend will be Gentz and guitarist Julz Parker’s ninth time performing their fusion of Americana, blues, country, folk and roots at the annual event.
“Bluesfest introduced us to what festivals are really,” Parker said.

“It’s been such a huge part of our development as both music fans and musicians.
“It’s still an absolute joy and honour every time we play there. We travel the world playing but it’s great being able to play to a home crowd with world class production.”
The Lismore-based duo, who were named winners of the Gold Coast Music Awards’ Live Act of the Year in 2024, was in France when they heard the announcement that this year’s Bluesfest would be the last.
“It turned my stomach and made me feel very sad,” Parker said.
“It’s an institution. It’s by far the most important festival in this area and has provided huge access to world class artists.
“It would be amazing if everything went well and the support was there and they were able to keep going.”
Hussy Hicks is playing at Bluesfest at 6pm on Saturday and 2.30pm on Sunday.
