In Antony and Cleopatra
THEATRE troupe Come You Spirits is returning to the Brunswick Picture House with its acclaimed production of Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra on Sunday, October 20.
Directed by Damien Ryan, who brings a career of Shakespearean expertise, storytelling and adaptation, the Sydney Arts Guide said the play was ‘magnificently performed, [with] outstanding actors’ and ‘Best of the best – highly recommended’.
The story of the titans of two empires – Mark Antony of Rome, the warrior torn between duty and passion, and Queen Cleopatra of Egypt, a pillar of sovereignty and a Goddess of immortality, transcends time. The sumptuous verse of Shakespeare’s play remains as potent 417 years after its 1607 premiere.
At the end of its Northern Rivers tour, the play is set within a tomb-like intimacy, transporting audiences deep into the portal of time and timelessness.
The company is dedicated to immersing audiences in performance and live rituals to bring magic, passion and the power of remembrance through a historical context.
Come You Spirits consists of Jo Bloom, Charles Mayer, Sontaan Hopson and Ciaran O’Riordan, who perform their repertoire in extraordinary outdoor and indoor spaces, with music composed by Brandon Read.
Adapting Shakespeare’s plays to be told by four characters, the characters share their innermost secrets of the soul. The company believes the language used to convey the wonders and mysteries of the natural world reminds audiences of their superpowers and is a celebratory return to magic to unify communities.
As an organisation, Come You Spirits is committed to sustainability in people, policies, practice and programming. It is proud of its solar-powered, long-term employing, community-connected, eco-storytelling, caring career actor ethos.
The commitment to sustainability is not only a part of the company’s identity, but also an inspiration for the audience to support such initiatives.
