Standing up for Mandy
COMEDY colleagues and friends of federal Greens candidate Mandy Nolan will converge at Twin Towns on November 20 for a night of laughs and serious fundraising.
Stand Up for Mandy is a super showcase of Australia’s finest comedic talent, headlined by Kitty Flanagan, Dave Hughes and Akmal. The comedy gala hosted by Ellen Briggs will also feature Ting Lim and Jackie Loeb.
On social media, Nolan said she was grateful to have the support of the best comedians in the country.
“When people ask me if I have what it takes to survive Canberra, I reflect on my comedy career,” Nolan said.
“It was brutal, but I endured. I found my voice.
“In doing that, I found how deeply I cared about social change and about speaking up for the vulnerable – from forests to families without a home.”
The show has big names on the bill. Logie winner, author and star of ABC hit comedy Fisk, Flanagan is known and loved for her unapologetically desert-dry comedy style.
University dropout and former abattoir worker turned vegan, Hughes has risen to one of this country’s most in-demand TV and radio presenters with his laconic Aussie drawl and self-deprecating wit.
Egyptian-born, Punchbowl-raised Akmal brings a fresh perspective to the stage, calling out bigotry and racial stereotypes and smashing myths with humour and insight.
Also performing are Singapore-born Brisbane-based Lim and ex-Full Frontal star, now Los Angeles local Loeb.
Ellen Briggs, the other half of Nolan’s Women Like Us, will MC the evening with her characteristic intellect and comedic timing.
Together, they bring a frontline of support and side-splitting gags to aid in getting Nolan to Canberra.
Stand up for Mandy is on at Twin Towns Showroom on Wednesday, November 20, at 7 pm. * All show times are Queensland AEST.
