ALEX Lloyd says working through childhood trauma has helped improve his mental health and inspired a career renaissance, including his first studio album in 12 years.
The four-time ARIA Award winner, who rose to fame with his 2001 hit Amazing, will perform at the Ballina RSL Club on September 20 as part of his regional tour.
Lloyd said he has battled a range of personal challenges in recent years, which have contributed to a significant weight loss and improved wellbeing.
Playing in Ballina will be a special moment for the 50-year-old, who remembers his mother Bridget, who died of cancer when he was a teenager.
“I’ve lost more than 70kg and I feel amazing — for want of a better phrase,” Lloyd said.
“I love going into regional areas and a lot of Mum’s old friends have moved to the Northern Rivers so it kind of feels like home.”
Lloyd’s upcoming album features two new tracks, Echoes of Home and I’m Sorry, both deeply personal.
He now spends part of his time working with children in Sydney who have been exposed to childhood trauma.
“I’ve had a lot of issues over the years, and I hope sharing my experiences can help other people,” he said.
“My brother and I witnessed domestic violence from our stepfather and I’m doing a lot of work with people in childhood trauma.
“I’m obviously not a trained expert, but you know you’re doing good when you see a smile on a kid’s face.”
Lloyd said his new music reflects the highs and lows he’s experienced throughout his career.
“They’re just songs that are very real to me, it’s like a big cathartic hug,” he said.
“It has been an emotional journey and Echoes of Home kind of sums up everything I’ve been through.
“Trauma never leaves you; it can take time, you need to just find a way to live with it.
“If you open yourself up along the way, you’ll meet some really good people and learn more about yourself.
“I’m still a work in progress and that’s okay, too.”
