Bad Mums brings the comedy to parenthood
RISING comedy star Nikki Justice is bringing her hit show Bad Mums to Murwillumbah this month.
Justice is known for sharing her wild experiences on stage and diving in headfirst to confront stigmas and prejudice but, notably, finding the funny in a frenetic world.
Described by critics as ‘like Shameless meets Sex and the City, with a splash of sexy ADHD chaotic brilliance’, there is little doubt that the show does not attract a pearl-clutching set.
Justice draws audiences open to unabashed hilarity, diving headfirst into wild stories of parenting in an unconventional and unpredictable life.
Her life as the former wife of a bikie gang member and years of ricocheting through uncertainty have created fertile ground for her comedy, becoming an outlet for processing her past and, importantly, her future.
“I had just gone through a divorce, and I was finding myself again and experiencing a lot of dating and parenting disasters, which I would over-share on Instagram,” she said.
“A local comic was watching my antics online and commented on one of my posts, which planted the seed, and soon after, I did my first open mic doing jokes about my ex (which was very therapeutic and I 10/10 highly recommend).
“Laughter really is the best medicine, and that first gig gave me the bug for comedy – I’ve never looked back.”
The show has an edgy appeal to people struggling to be perfect parents.
“With Bad Mums, it’s honest and relatable,” Justice said.
“Parenting can be an absolute shit-show, and a lot of us are just winging it.
“Mums feel seen, and they often tell me they leave feeling better about themselves and their own parenting, especially after hearing my overshares.”
The mother of three has received differing responses from her brood on her advent into comedy.
“My five-year-old, and I quote, said, ‘My mummy makes old people laugh’, my middle child thinks it’s great, and my teenager thinks everything I do is cringe, but he once said in a mumble that he is proud of me, which from him felt like a standing ovation.”
Parents and lovers of rich, raw comedy can see the 18+ show on July 5 at M|Arts.
