Balancing cattle management and conservation

A FREE introduction to property planning field day will showcase the benefits of incorporating the principles of cattle grazing and conservation on private properties on Tuesday, October 29.

Presented by North Coast Regional Landcare, Tweed Land Care Inc. and the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust, the session will demonstrate the benefits of balanced land management for farmers.

The Tweed Shire Council, Sustainability and Environment team will deliver the day’s activities alongside farmers Rhonda and Greg James on their 220-hectare Cudgera Creek cattle property on Bundjalung Country.

A high proportion of grazing properties have high conservation value bushland. The event aims to demonstrate the benefits of biodiversity on farms and will include a range of speakers and a farm walk and talk tour of the property, including through high-value conservation bushland.

The couple has balanced farming and natural area restoration on their property for over 40 years. Rhonda James is highly regarded as a skilful and dedicated restoration ecologist.

As one of Australia’s most experienced and respected experts, the former bushland restoration educator with TAFE NSW is passionate in her commitment to ecological restoration.

More than 20 environmental care groups are working throughout the region to restore about 200 hectares of bushland along creeks, rivers, wetlands, hilltops and coastal dunes.

Volunteers undertake bush, coastal and riverine regeneration, including weed control and native planting. Tweed Landcare meets on the third Wednesday of every month at 5.30pm, and new volunteers are always welcome.

The free Landcare Field Day at 1628 Reserve Creek Road, Cudgera Creek, runs from 10am to 2pm.
