THE Bangalow branch of the Country Women’s Association will host a morning tea for the community to raise funds for the Cancer Council on Thursday, May 22.

The event, part of the national Biggest Morning Tea campaign, will be held from 10am to 12pm at the Moller Pavilion at Bangalow Showgrounds. A representative from the Cancer Council and a skin specialist will speak at the gathering.

Guests will be treated to a spread of scones with jam and cream, cakes, slices and sandwiches.

“We lost two members the year before last to cancer,” Bangalow CWA acting president Michelle Johnston said.

“It’s something that affects everyone, including partners and friends. That’s why we all need to get behind fundraising for cancer research.”

Mrs Johnston said the event was previously run by the Bangalow Quilters, who had passed the baton to the CWA this year.

“A lady from the Cancer Council spoke and we were surprised that the money raised doesn’t just go to research – it also helps with volunteers who take people to treatment who can’t otherwise get there and cancer care nurses,” she said.

“Last year the quilters had around 80 people there and raised a bit over $2,000. We hope to raise $5,000.”

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the door. Donation boxes will also be placed on each table for additional contributions.
