FROM sequinned frocks to cowboy hats, mums and dads are busily planning their outfits for what has become the event of the year in the Byron Bay hinterland.

More than 100 people are expected to attend the Bangalow Boujee Bush Ball, which is the annual fundraiser for Bangalow Community Children’s Centre, at the town’s A&I Hall on September 14.

“It’s going to be a really fun night,” Amelia McLaurin, who is secretary of the pre-school’s parents committee, said.

“Pre-COVID there was a big event every year with a different theme, from Moulin Rouge to Casino Royale.

“It died down for a bit and last year we decided to reinstate it.

“We have a beautiful venue in the A&I Hall and we wanted a theme that embraced the history and country feel of Bangalow, but also to make it a bit glam.

“The boujee theme went really well so we thought let’s keep the momentum going and hopefully people can get behind it.”

McLaurin said the event is like an old-school dance reimagined.

“There will be some sparkles, disco balls, live music, good food, dancing and an opportunity to get dressed up – or not,” she said.

“Some people last year came in cowboy hats and boots, others in sparkly dresses, but most came in a mix of both.

“It’s really open to interpretation. It can be as little or as much as you want.”

Attendees will dine on Mexican food from the team from nearby café Woods, and drink Brookie’s Gin from Cape Byron Distillery, craft beer from Common People Brewing Co. and wine from Bangalow Cellars.

There will also be a lucky door prize, prizes for the best dressed attendees and an auction of kids’ artworks, with prizes donated by local businesses including Manu’s Bangalow Alimentari, Balloon Aloft, Zephyr Horses, Beach Houses of Byron, Circus Arts Byron Bay and Newrybar Merchants.
