TWEED Shire Council plans to build a 52-space parking facility on Hastings Road at Bogangar and is seeking community feedback to enhance accessibility to the coastal village.

The proposed site is on Council-owned land, south of the back entrance to the Cabarita Woolworths supermarket.

The site has been designated as a car park as far back as 2005.

The proposed ground-level facility would provide key safety features such as centre bay lighting, a shared pedestrian zone, a maximum speed limit of 10 km/h, and a prohibition on overnight parking.

Manager Roads and Stormwater Danny Rose said Bogangar was one of the Tweed Coast’s most popular destinations for visitors and residents.

“It has grown significantly over the past 20 years,” Rose said.

“The proposed new car park should go a long way towards helping to ease parking pressures, particularly in summer when the beaches are spectacular, and the cafes are thriving.”

The new car park aims to enhance accessibility for both locals and visitors.

In May 2024, councillors voted to pursue a ground-level option, estimated to cost up to $400,000, against the alternative of a 4-level car park, estimated to cost $11 million. Key stakeholders, including property owners, tenants, and key community stakeholders, such as the Cabarita Progressive Business Association, Cabarita Beach Surf Life Saving Club, Lions Club of Cabarita Beach Pottsville Beach Inc, and the Cabarita Beach Bogangar Residents Association Inc, have been actively involved in consultations with the council.

“We have been speaking to adjacent business owners, neighbours and community representatives. However, there is still an opportunity for the community to provide additional feedback, Rose said.

“We believe this project will significantly enhance community access for Cabarita Beach and Bogangar, and community input will help us ensure it meets community needs.”
