THE Byron-based sibling dynamic duo behind Australia’s first reusable menstrual disc is on a mission to provide safe and affordable period products worldwide.

The driving force behind Australia’s period care revolution, female-founded femtech brand Hey Zomi aims to give women the power to have periods on their terms.

Co-founder Zoe Fehlberg said she and co-founder sister Mika Koelma had been dissatisfied for years.

“Nothing available on the market supported our lifestyle,” Ms Fehlberg said.

“We both worked busy jobs, and the products couldn’t handle travel, scuba diving, hikes, marathons or back-to-back meetings without a chance for a toilet break.

“It wasn’t until our late 20s that we shared this and decided there had to be a better way, which set in motion this journey together.”

The mother of two said she wanted her children to grow up in a society acknowledging it as a normal part of life.

“It’s about innovating better solutions and keeping the conversation real to be better than before,” Ms Fehlberg said.

“As a mum of toddlers, I love it. Most days, I don’t think about it until my shower that night. It’s mind-blowingly easy,” she said.

In the wake of Women’s Health Week, the founders believe Hey Zomi is an empowering shift in health rights.

The world-first disc is affordable, convenient, undetectable, holds four tampons worth of fluid, and can be worn for 12 hours and emptied without removal. It also allows a natural, mess-free solution to sexual activity while menstruating.

“It’s an honour to live in a place like Byron that is full of creativity and aligns with the values of sustainability that Hey Zomi has at its core,” Ms Fehlberg said. “It’s energising to connect with like-minded businesses who want to make an impact on the world.”

With an average expected life span of at least five years, the cost-effective disc also diverts a significant amount of product waste from landfill.

Five per cent of all sales go to the period poverty charity Share the Dignity. For more information, visit heyzomi.com
