LISMORE Base Hospital is calling for volunteers to join its Healthcare Helpers program to ease pressure on staff at hospitals across the Northern NSW Local Health District.

Organisers of the program, which currently has 16 volunteers, this week launched a recruitment drive at Lismore Square Shopping Centre, and said volunteers were especially needed in the hospital’s acute stroke and dementia unit and surgical wards.

Launched in 2023, the Healthcare Helpers program quickly became a valued service at Lismore Base Hospital.

Healthcare Helpers’ roles include welcoming visitors, assisting people find their way around the hospital, and providing care to existing patients.

Lismore Base Hospital general manager Ian Hatton said volunteers play a vital role in comforting and supporting patients.

“Our doctors, nurses and allied health staff deeply appreciate the support volunteers provide,” Mr Hatton said.

“We’re eager to welcome more people from diverse backgrounds so our volunteer team reflects the broader community, helping patients feel even more at ease.”

Jonathan Lawrence started volunteering in 2024 and said the experience was rewarding and flexible.

“I like being a volunteer as I get to meet a lot of people and feel part of the team,” Mr Lawrence said.

“The hours are flexible and I’m not tied down to a rigid schedule.”

One of the hospital’s newest volunteers Dorothy Thomas said she has taken part in a range of tasks.

“Every day is different and good and it’s great seeing the amazing nursing staff all working together for the patients’ welfare,” Ms Thomas said.

“It’s great being able to give something extra for patients who are all so resilient and brave.”

Ms Thomas said she enjoys having a chat, making cups of tea, grabbing extra blankets and even playing cards with some of the patients.

Applications are now open for volunteer roles at other hospitals and facilities at Nimbin, Bonalbo, Urbenville and Kyogle.
