BALLINA Byron Gateway Airport has made changes to help people with specific disabilities being screened through security with support items, including noise-cancelling headphones.

It is part of upgrades to aviation security regulations issued by the Department of Home Affairs, which aims to improve accessibility for passengers with autism and others with sensory needs.

“The new rules allow travellers with specific disabilities to be screened with support items,” a Ballina Byron Gateway Airport spokesperson said.

“In some cases, these items may need to be cleared separately, but this does not prevent the person from being screened.

“There will be no changes to existing screening processes, which continue to align with national regulations.”

Aspect Autism Friendly is a service provider, and said it had worked closely with airports around Australia to improve accessibility for people with autism and those with hidden disabilities.

The team provides customised training for staff and said the change directly benefits people travelling through airports with body scanners.

The head of Aspect Autism Friendly, Dr Tom Tutton, said the change recognised the barriers people with autism face at airports and will help reduce stress and sensory overload at a critical point in the travel journey.

“This is a small procedural change, but it has a huge impact on the travel experience for autistic people,” he said.

“We are working with our airport partners to ensure this messaging gets to all security staff.

“We know it will take time for every staff member in every airport to be fully aware of the new guidance, which is why we encourage travellers to self-advocate calmly and prepare ahead.”
