AN Australian citizenship ceremony at the Lismore Council Chambers last week welcomed 20 new citizens.

Lismore City mayor Steve Krieg saluted the new citizens from Brazil, Cambodia, Malaysia, Mauritius, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Thailand.

Krieg said it was an honour to welcome new citizens.

“One of the best parts of my job is to warmly welcome new Australian citizens who are now part of the common bond that unites all Australians and respects diversity,” he said.

“Congratulations and welcome to our new citizens.

“Australia is one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world, and since 1949, we have welcomed more than five million new citizens to our shores.”

The Lismore City Council organises regular citizenship ceremonies to welcome new Australian citizens into the community on behalf of the Department of Home Affairs.
