The upcoming Bulls in the Bay 2026 event, set to take place at the Byron Bay Red Devils Rugby League Football Club’s home ground, is offering the club a chance to raise funds. But the rodeo-style evening is stirring strong opinions across the local community.
Scheduled for Saturday, 3 January at Red Devil Park, the event will feature bull riding and bronc riding competitions across several categories. Additional entertainment includes a family zone, live music and freestyle motocross displays.
While some see it as a fun summer night and a way to support a local club, others are calling it animal cruelty.

An image posted on the Byron Bay Community Board Facebook group showed the event’s promotional sign defaced with the word “cruel” spray painted across it. The post questioned the protest and encouraged those opposed to come up with alternative fundraising ideas or offer direct support.
The image sparked a flood of comments from both sides. One commenter said that while fundraising is understandable, “animal abuse needs to go the way of the dinosaur.” Another added, “Sign looks much better now. Animal abuse isn’t welcome here.”
Others pushed back against that view. One local described the event as “a Byron tradition for many years now.” Another questioned the criticism, writing, “Are you vegetarian or do you love a steak and chops?”
