LISMORE City Council has launched a new Reconciliation Action Plan with support from local elders, staff and the wider Indigenous community.

The launch coincided with a flag-raising ceremony for National Reconciliation Week, held at the council chambers.

Mayor Steve Krieg welcomed guest speakers Aunty Ros and Aunty Thelma, who shared reflections on culture, healing and connection.

This year’s theme, ‘Bridging Now to Next’, focuses on working together to create better outcomes for the whole community.

“As Aunty Thelma said we should accept everyone for who they are and not be defined by the colour of our skin,” Cr Krieg said.

“I’ve learnt so much from listening to these ladies.

“Not only in the advisory group meetings, but they inform me on a personal level on what we as a council and a community can be better at.”

Council ran engagement sessions with external consultants, while staff helped shape the plan.

It is the fourth of its kind, with a major focus on nurturing Indigenous employees and delivering on key actions in the program.

“Reconciliation and nurturing our Indigenous employees is something that is at the heart of everything we do,” Cr Krieg said.

“The plan is something we take very seriously and we want to make it part of our daily operations.

“Everyone at council and all the people who live in Lismore should be accepted and made to feel welcome for who they are.”

Council also launched the 2025 Cory James Memorial Scholarship, which has assisted several employees over the past three years.

James was a young Indigenous council employee who passed away suddenly in 2019.

He is remembered each year for his efforts in promoting Indigenous culture and heritage in the community.

The $5000 scholarship supports further training and education within council.

Applications close on Friday, June 20 and can be made via the council website.
