A NEW breast cancer support group is helping survivors and patients connect in the Tweed, following its launch last month at the CWA Hall in Murwillumbah.
The Healing Together group drew more than 50 people to the launch event.
CWA secretary Sandra Hawken said the organisation supported several community charities and that this project was close to the membership’s heart.
“We currently have several members who have personally experienced a form of cancer, some of them breast cancer, or know someone who has or has had cancer,” Hawken said.
“When we heard about the initiative, our members decided to provide the hall free of charge, and to sponsor the event by providing the afternoon tea, and it was lovely to do that.
“We always look to the community as there are many big organisations that receive funding nationally, and often smaller groups that directly impact our local community don’t receive the support, so we look towards whom we can support locally.” Healing Together organiser Amanda Stevenson said that even years after remission, she still felt the need for group support sometimes.
“It’s a long road, and the tricky thing is that even when you’re in remission, there’s always that little niggle in the background about when it’s gonna pop up again, and it has popped up for numerous women in the CWA,” she said.
“Each year we choose a different charity, and we thought this group was very much needed, because often people who are suffering from cancer have many questions.
“This new group is providing just that support, for people to get in touch with professionals, but also to talk to others who’ve had a similar experience.
“You never know what’s around the corner, do you?”
All breast cancer survivors and patients at all stages of their journey are welcome to Healing Together, which meets on the third Sunday of the month in Tumbulgum.
