CUTS to staffing levels at Southern Cross School of Distance Education will not affect Ballina’s public high school, the NSW Department of Education said.

A spokesperson for the department said: “There are no plans for any structural changes at Ballina Coast High School.”

In 2019, Years 7 to 12 classes at Ballina High School and Southern Cross K–12 merged to form the $40 million super school, Ballina Coast High School.

Southern Cross continues to cater for students in kindergarten to Year 6, with support units on site for all distance education in Ballina.

The Department of Education spokesperson said a recent audit of the Southern Cross School of Distance Education “uncovered irregularities in enrolment numbers which must be resolved”.

“All Southern Cross School of Distance Education students will continue their current studies, and the curriculum will continue to be delivered through the school,” the spokesperson said.

“Work is currently underway to ensure Southern Cross School of Distance Education is operating within its staffing entitlement.

“No permanent staff will lose their jobs. We are working closely with staff and education partners, and supporting any staff affected by the changes.

“The school has advised parents, but any families with concerns can also contact the school directly.”
