A CONSTRUCTION company that played a vital role in Lismore’s flood recovery has won five awards at the 2024 Business Lismore Awards, including Business of the Year.

Joel Jensen Constructions, led by Joel Jensen, secured the top honour just a month after also winning five awards at the Master Builders Association NSW – Northern NSW & New England Awards.

The company has thrived under Jensen’s leadership despite the challenges of a pandemic and two floods.

Mr Jensen’s actions during the 2022 flood, when he ventured into the floodwaters with a mate and a boat to rescue residents, earned him immense respect in the community.

“It just had to be done,” he said. “There was no call to arms, everyone just knew it had to be done.”

After the floodwaters receded, Jensen’s business premises in South Lismore were left in ruins.

Despite this, Mr Jensen kept his staff on and focused on helping the community recover, offering structural assessments and clearing mud and debris.

Joel Jensen Constructions has also been involved in rebuilding many of Lismore’s businesses, including 187 Cantina and La Barracca.

Mr Jensen said it was amazing to attend the award night to celebrate the Lismore Business community and its achievements and resilience.

“We were blown away to win five awards on the night, including the major award – Business of the Year!”

Mr Jensen credits his family and team for the success of the business, stating he could not have done it without them.
