A STRING of dangerous lithium-ion battery fires has prompted a safety warning from Fire and Rescue NSW.

Recent incidents in the region have included an e-bike battery catching fire while being charged inside a home using a non-compatible charger.

In that case, the battery appeared to self-extinguish but reignited while being moved, causing burns to the resident.

In a statement, Fire and Rescue NSW warned that lithium-ion batteries are “highly energy-dense and can be extremely volatile if misused”.

“When they fail, they can enter a state of thermal runaway – a violent chain reaction that causes the battery to overheat, explode or catch fire,” the statement said.

Lithium-ion batteries are used in e-bikes, scooters, power tools and many household devices.

The statement urged people to always use the correct charger for each device.

“Incompatibility has been linked to a number of fires locally and across the state,” it said.

Fire and Rescue NSW also advised against charging devices indoors and reminded residents to stay alert to the potential risks.
