A Fast-tracked work and training program is helping people gain valuable hands-on experience with Lismore City Council, while earning formal qualifications which could lead to future employment opportunities.

The Lismore Employment Acceleration Pathways program is part of the state governments Fresh Start initiative.

It has allowed six roles to be filled by apprentices and trainees at council, with jobs in water operations, civil construction, business administration, parks and gardens and electrical trades.

Each successful applicant works under the guidance of experienced mentors while working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

General Manager Jon Gibbons said the program is about long-term investment in people and services.

“We’re not only creating career pathways for local people but ensuring Lismore City Council has the skilled workforce it needs for years to come,” he said.

“This initiative strengthens our capability, supports local jobs and helps us continue delivering essential services to our LGA.”

Council received more than 100 Expressions of Interest and held an information session with over 30 attendees, showing strong local interest.

Trainee Kamron Thurgood said her experience so far has been supportive and rewarding.

“I’ve learned a lot quickly without feeling rushed, and the team has been amazing,” she said.

“With Youth Week approaching, I have been assisting in developing the program, which includes a fantastic range of events and activities.

“I want to gain as many experiences and skills as I can. I don’t want to be limited in what I can do, so I’m taking on as much as possible while I have the chance.”

The program runs annually with support from Training NSW and High Schools in the region.
