General manager steps down from role
LISMORE City council is on the lookout for a new general manager, following the sudden departure of Jon Gibbons, just two years into a five-year term.
Lismore City mayor Steve Krieg said Mr Gibbons was moving on due to family reasons.
He was appointed one year after the devastating floods in 2022.
“While I am saddened by his departure, I respect his decision and thank him for his dedicated service to our community,” Krieg said.
“Mr Gibbons has been a valuable leader for Lismore City council during a critical period in our city’s recovery.
“His guidance and steady leadership have been instrumental in navigating the challenges we have faced and I extend my sincere gratitude for his contributions during his tenure.”
Mr Gibbons has a long history in local government and was previously Business Performance and Governance at Gold Coast City council.
He came to Lismore with qualifications in urban and regional planning, environmental health, local government management and project management.
He previously served four years as the chief executive of Scenic Rim council, as well as CEO at Norfolk Island and Carpentaria councils.
Mr Gibbons took over from acting general manager John Walker who withdrew his application for the permanent role in December 2022.
“Throughout his time with council, Mr Gibbons has played a key role in strengthening the relationship between councillors and the executive team,” Krieg said.
“He has worked closely with staff to develop and implement new strategies and processes aimed at improving productivity and operational efficiency.
“Beyond his role within council, Mr Gibbons has been a dedicated advocate for Lismore and its recovery.”
