SONYA Gibbons attended her first mosaic workshop 20 years ago with one simple goal: to tile her bathroom floor.

What she didn’t realise then was that one day she’d be leading workshops of her own, teaching others how to express themselves through the colourful, meditative art form.

Gibbons stepped into the teaching role at Northern Rivers Tiles & Mosaics two years ago when owner Joye Spink became too busy running the shop to continue.

“I enjoy getting people together and inspiring them to take up the art form, make beautiful pieces for their homes and gardens and believe in their own creativity,” she said.

Now, Gibbons is inviting newcomers and curious creatives to join two upcoming workshops: a beginner mosaic workshop starting on July 6, and a mindful mandala workshop beginning August 7.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of mosaic art, from design through to grouting, over four classes and will leave with a finished piece of their own.

“We will make a trivet in the workshop, but you can mosaic wall hangings, pots, tables, pavers, birdbaths, walls,” Gibbons said.

“Some participants come to a workshop to gain the confidence to take on a larger project they have in mind, such as mosaicing a large outdoor area.”

Gibbons originally trained in nursing and wellness coaching, but now focuses on mindfulness through creativity.

“I love creating, recycling, making my own unique artwork and practicing a meditative flow,” she said.

She said doing a mosaic workshop is a great way for people to do something for themselves, take a break from daily demands and meet like-minded people.
