Mullumbimby fire station marks 100 years
CELEBRATIONS have been in full swing for the centenary of Mullumbimby Fire Station House 388, with a wide range of activities honouring its 100 years of operation.
As part of the schedule, the brigade re-enacted the first drill for the fire commissioner and the mayor from 100 years ago, albeit with the modern touch of a hydrant and breathing apparatus.
A group of serving fire crew, together with captain Josh Rushton in an early 20th-century uniform, walked around town and visited most of the businesses in Mullumbimby to thank them for their support over 100 years and the community’s backing in recent weeks.
Shops were decorated and the streets were full of red in honour of the brigade.
At the formal centenary ceremony, Byron Shire deputy mayor Sarah Ndiaye congratulated the firefighters on their 100th birthday.
“We had some wonderful historical stories from back in the day and plenty from just the last five years,” Cr Ndiaye said.
“We are so lucky to have such dedicated and caring firefighters that are so involved in our community,” she said. “They will have to adapt and change with the challenges of our changing climate, but they’re the right people to do it.”
