New facilities for Chick Park paddlers
TWEED Shire Council has announced a new kayak and canoe launch facility at Chick Park near Tumbulgum.
The new facility will provide safe and convenient access to Stotts Channel for paddlers around Stotts Island Nature Reserve.
Severe weather and flooding in 2022 caused significant damage to the internal access road and car park, including the road surface and subsidence. The upgrade is the first step in a series for Chick Park, with carpark resealing due to take place in mid-2025.
The upgrade aims to improve the overall functionality and durability of the car park and enhance the car park’s visual appeal. It will also enhance the car park’s resilience to future weather events and improve accessibility for all visitors.
Tweed Council’s Waterways Project Officer Matthew Bloor said the upgrade would allow Tweed residents and visitors to connect with nature while minimising impacts on the natural environment.
“Stotts Island is the largest remnant of subtropical floodplain rainforest remaining in New South Wales,” Bloor said.
“Though landing on Stotts Island is not permitted, we’re thrilled to offer the community the chance to appreciate its beauty from the water.”
The two projects are jointly funded by the Australian and NSW Governments, including a Boating Now grant from Transport for NSW.
Construction on the new launch will begin this month and is expected to take three months. Chick Park carpark will be closed during construction.
