OUTBOUND traffic will be banned from Mullumbimby Road from October 13 as council moves into the next stage of upgrade works between The Saddle Road and Gulgan Road.
The road will remain open to inbound traffic, with emergency services and school buses given full access under traffic signal control.
Drivers heading out of Mullumbimby will need to use alternative routes such as Myocum Road and Coolamon Scenic Drive, with heavy vehicles directed to Myocum Road.
Stage two of the project includes drainage work near Uncle Tom’s intersection, a new culvert to improve stormwater flow to Everitts Creek, resurfacing, guardrails, signage, line marking and minor widening within the existing corridor.
Council said it was not possible to maintain two-way access or operate one lane of alternating traffic because of the narrow corridor and the intersection with Gulgan Road, where traffic queues would create safety hazards.
Night works were also ruled out due to safety risks, supply restrictions, and cost, which was estimated to add 33 per cent to the project budget.
The multi-million-dollar upgrade is funded by the NSW and Federal Governments and council, with the aim of improving road safety, drainage and repairing flood-damaged sections.
