IT’S time to dust off the Star Trek costumes and steampunk outfits, the Lismore Show is set to become Cosplay central with PopZone taking over a pavilion at the annual agricultural show.

For those unsure what Cosplay is, it is the practice of dressing up as a character from a film, book, or video game. And it’s hugely popular around the world.

Trade Space Co-ordinator of the Elders Lismore Show, Marny Bonner hopes to tap into that popularity to attract a more diverse crowd to the show.

Ms Bonner said it will be the first time Cosplay traders will have an outlet in Lismore, and hoped the event would grow to become a standalone event.

But for now, pop art, fandom merchandise and collectibles, a Zine Scene, and cosplay competitions will take over a pavilion at the Lismore Show, running from October 17 to October 19.

Ms Bonner is calling out for ideas, traders, and participants for the event. “The beauty of the show is that it appeals to so many different assets of the community.

“This is the first time Cosplay has been integrated into an ag show. It’s really progressive, moving into the 21st century.

“Cosplay is rapidly growing in popularity. People of all ages are finding it a lot of fun. The wonderful thing about it is that it can involve the whole family.

“I love the inclusiveness of it. There’s no judgment. It’s a tribe.”

She said while Cosplay might be screen-inspired, it encouraged people to move away from screens and socialise.

The highlight of PopZone will be the Cosplay Stage, where the regional cosplay community will showcase their creativity. They will also be part of the community parade on October 18.

Participants across three age categories are encouraged to develop a unique character to be judged on the Cosplay stage after the community parade.

Winners and runners-up will be rewarded with cash prizes.

Participants, traders and those with ideas to share can contact Ms Bonner on 0459 309 223.

The deadline for registration is September 27.
