RETIRED police officers were honoured in Lismore as part of Richmond Police District’s annual Retired Police Day.

The event was held at the Lismore police station training rooms with presentations from highway patrol and the bomb and rescue squads.

“Retired Police Day is all about recognising and acknowledging the contribution of past members who have served with honour and distinction,” Richmond Police District chief inspector Susan Johnston said.

“It provides the opportunity for retired police to be honoured, and as it is held at local stations, it allows positive interactions between current serving officers and the retirees.”

The event has been running each year since 2012 and is held across various police districts.

A retired superintendent with 39 years of service in the force and a former assistant commissioner from Queensland Police attended the Lismore event.

“We had current serving officers do a short presentation each promoting the advancements in equipment and technology,” Chief Inspector Johnston said.

“This is to show the former officers how far policing has come in the years that have followed them and how policing duties have changed.”

Richmond Police District will next host a National Police Remembrance Day service on Monday, September 29, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Uralba Street.

“It is one of the most important events on the calendar where we remember fallen officers from around Australia and overseas, including New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa and the Solomon Islands,” Chief Inspector Johnston said.
