It comes less than two months after a boy was bitten by a shark at the same location.
Australian Lifeguard Service lifeguards were tasked and immediately worked with Tweed Shire Council to close the beach and put up signage to warn the public not to enter the water.
Just after 8am this morning, the Surf Life Saving NSW State Operations Centre was alerted to an incident at the unpatrolled Cabarita Beach which was called in through Triple 0.
Footage emerged of the surfer’s board bitten in half as the crowd gathered on the beach.
Witnesses reported a four-metre great white shark in the vicinity, with Surf Life Saving NSW deploying drones for air surveillance at the scene.
Cabarita Beach is closed while all other Tweed Coast beaches are being monitored.
“We’ve been advised by NSW Surf Life Saving that Cabarita Beach at Norries Headland is currently closed due to a shark bite incident earlier this morning,” a council spokesperson said.
“No one was injured during the incident.”
A 16-year-old surfer was injured in a shark attack at the same beach last month.
In December 2024, mayor Chris Cherry put forward a motion for the council to continue supporting drones, SMART drum lines and tagged shark listening stations in the shire, including a request for additional mitigation drone hours in areas south of the shire such as Pottsville and Black Rock.
