Southern Cross entomologist wins national award
SOUTHERN Cross University entomologist Professor Nigel Andrew has won the 2024 Ian Mackerras Medal for his groundbreaking work on dung beetles and fire ants.
Professor Andrew received the medal during the Australian Entomological Society’s conference in Hobart, where he also delivered a keynote address.
“Receiving the 2024 Mackerras Medal is a very humbling experience for me,” Professor Andrew said.
“So many of my entomological mentors have been awarded this prestigious award. It’s fantastic to be part of an amazing community.”
Joining Southern Cross University two years ago, he became the institution’s first Professor of Entomology and now serves as Chair of Science in the Faculty of Science and Engineering.
He said the university’s commitment to expanding its entomology programs is vital for the future of the discipline.
“While other universities are losing entomological expertise, the expansion of Entomology at Southern Cross is exciting for the future of the discipline, given our links across northern NSW and southern Queensland,” Professor Andrew said.
His research focuses on dung beetles, exploring their role in addressing environmental and industry challenges, while his work on red imported fire ants provides critical pest management solutions for macadamia farmers in northern NSW and Queensland.
The Ian Mackerras Medal, awarded every two years, recognises mid-career excellence in entomology.
Named after the society’s first president, Dr Ian Mackerras, the medal honours individuals who exemplify the high standards and achievements associated with the field.
