LISMORE rugby league talent Natalia Hickling is on the cusp of fulfilling a lifelong dream after signing her first NRLW contract with the New Zealand Warriors.
The 19-year-old halfback is among a promising group of players hoping to make their debut in the competition this season after earning a place in the Warriors squad.
She represented the Tweed Seagulls in the Harvey Norman under-17 and under-19 competitions in 2024 and 2025.
Hickling also led Northern United to last season’s Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League women’s tackle grand final win.
The former Richmond River High School captain said the opportunity to join the Warriors was both exciting and deeply meaningful as an Indigenous athlete.
“They’ve got such a strong culture and connection to their people, and that really stood out to me because it reminds me of home,” Hickling said.
“It was one of those moments where you just feel so proud and excited for what’s ahead.
“It’s not just about signing; it’s about new opportunities to grow, represent my culture and club, and be a part of something big.
“This is something I’ve wanted for a long time, and I knew this was the next step for me.”
The move to New Zealand marks a significant step in her career and one that has required considerable sacrifice.

“Even though I had to travel a lot for sport to find better opportunities, home was always where I felt most comfortable,” she said. “So, making the decision to move my whole life to New Zealand was a big one.
“It meant stepping away from everything I’ve ever known – my family, my friends, my job – and starting fresh in a completely new environment.”
While a maiden NRLW appearance remains a goal, Hickling is focused on making the most of her first season in a professional environment.
“I’m still new to the environment, so for me it’s about taking everything in, developing my game and earning my place within the squad,” she said.
“A bonus would be to make my NRLW debut this season. But for now, my focus is to adapt to the new environment and be comfortable and happy.”
Warriors NRLW coach Ron Griffiths said Hickling’s football intelligence and maturity made her an exciting prospect for the club.
“Watching her play for the Northern Rivers Titans in the NSWRL Country Championships, there was much to admire,” he said.
“She is an organising halfback who is defensively brave and has the ability to manage a game while seeing it unfold and grab the in-between ad-lib moments.
“However, it’s her maturity beyond her years that is the most impressive trait.”
The Warriors’ first NRLW game will be against the Canterbury Bulldogs on Sunday 5 July.
